I live in the Bay Area and I like food.
A Hibiscus Tonic: infused hibiscus, citrus peels, allspice, clove, and black pepper. Tart, bitter, and a little spicy - but delicious (and pretty too!). Vita Simone Strauss from @copperspoon was on hand to help the students mix drinks at Taste of Bunche, a fundraiser for Bunche Culinary Academy's culinary program! Be sure to see all of the delicious things I got to eat - all made by the high school students in the program - in my latest post; link in bio! 🌺
I'm pretty sure I mingled with some future contestants of @foodnetwork's Chopped last Saturday at Ralph J. Bunche Academy's "A Taste of Bunche" fundraiser event to support their culinary program. My surprise favorite was the shrimp, grits, and collard greens! I've had mixed reactions to grits and collard greens, but these were so good! Not only was the shrimp flavorful (and spicy!), but the grits were creamy and the collard greens weren't bitter at all! Everything came together so well in this dish. Want to know what else these high school (yes, high school!) students cooked up? Be sure to check out the latest post on the blog, link in bio! 🤗
I can't wait for this Saturday to attend "A Taste of Bunche", a pop-up fundraiser by Ralph J. Bunche Academy! A part of the Oakland Unified School District, the academy is fundraising to support their culinary program and the Bunche Project Kitchen build on Saturday May 19th 6 PM to 9 PM. Their awesome culinary high school students will be preparing the entire menu (7 food stations!) and there's also going to be live jazz music, a silent auction, and more. • • Guiding the students for Taste of Bunche will be Chef David Isenberg, Culinary Program Director and Ms. Ester Richards, Director of HTR. They will be joined by Chef Nora Dunning, Executive Chef of Drip Line Restaurant and Chef Lev Dagan of Le Cordon Bleu and instructor at the popular Kitchen On Fire. • • Want to know how to get tickets? Tickets available for purchase through their Eventbrite page - which is linked in my bio (as is the menu). You can also donate to their fundraiser if you aren't able to attend. Hope to see you there! ✨ 📷: @instabunche
Are you like me and can’t deal with Coachella because it’s too hot, too dusty, and too expensive? Don’t worry, I gotchu. 👊🏼 You can still enjoy Coachella ~vibes~ with Factory Tea Bar’s Coachella Lemonade 😎 I got the Passion Peach and really liked it. Make sure to add some sugar since it’s a little on the sour side (because of that fresh squeezed juice) but I love tart things so this was up my alley. 🙌🏼 See what else is on @ftbfremont’s menu on the blog; link in bio! 🍑
It's that time of year again: Ramadan - whether you're starting today or tomorrow (it's 2018 and we still can't all start on the same day lol). During this month, Muslims don't eat or drink (yes #notevenwater) from sunrise to sunset. Not only is this time of year about gaining empathy for the less fortunate, it's also about spirit reflection, prayer, doing more good deeds, and spending time with family, friends, and your community. Not everyone is required to fast - kids, pregnant women, the elderly, people who are ill and/or have medical conditions are not obligated. I fall onto the last category so I've never been able to fast due to always being on medications that require food and water - but I still participate in every other way that I can and Iftar (opening your fast) is my favorite part because of the quality time you get to spend with people Ramadan Mubarak to all those observing! Only 29-30 more days until Eid - my favorite holiday! 🌙📿☪️
Can't believe Ramadan is just a couple of days away! It really feels like it crept up on us this time. I'm looking forward to posting some good food to make during this special month (for when it's time to open your fast), but in the meantime, you can check the "Bayfood Fasts" section on the blog, link in bio. 📿
